Bekaa Valley, Jordan

On a recent trip to Jordan with Survivor Corps, Bill Toliver, executive director of The Matale Line, was able to spend time at the world’s largest and oldest Palestinian refugee camp. After meeting with the leaders of the camp, Bill visited with a group of exuberant elementary school children and shared Arabic nursery rhymes. “Much to my chagrin,” admits Bill, “I discovered that my once-fluent Arabic wasn’t so fluent anymore!” During the visit, a long parade of children gave speeches, including a 6-year-old, who spoke of his Palestinian pride, and of his determination to return to “his homeland.” His grandparents were forced to leave their village in Palestine as young children. So, neither this small boy nor his parents have ever been to “their” village, but each successive generation has been indoctrinated in the language and mindset of victimization. Blessed are the peacemakers, for “in these circumstances,” laments Bill, “reconciliation and peace seem like a distant dream.”
